Catalina Brass
Catalina Brass was established in 2017 under the guidance of senior band members and music teachers Atticus Anderson and Trish O’Hearn and is aimed at the younger and developing members of the Toronto Brass community. Currently led by our Principal cornet player, Trish O’Hearn, herself a music teacher and brass tutor, the band’s focus is to nurture young brass and percussion musicians and give them an outlet for performing arts in the area.
Catalina Brass is open to young (and older) brass and percussion musicians from beginners up. Currently the band is made up of pupils from different schools in the area who enjoy getting together with like-minded friends each week to rehearse music for concerts and community events. We also have some learner adults who have come along for the ride. More advanced players are given opportunities to move into Toronto Brass when they are ready.
Some of our members are “multi-generational”. Bella Smith, who learns cornet enjoys playing music alongside her brother Will and father Chris, a tuba player with our senior band. Eamonn O’Hearn, drummer, is a 3rd generation Toronto Brass musician after his father Timothy and grandfather Dennis.
There has been a long history of junior bands in this area, both in the community and in local schools. Many of these young people have continued on to become music teachers, professional musicians and have gone onto play in some of the top brass bands in the country and overseas. Forming Catalina Brass is just one way we can give back to our supportive community and share our love of music with the next generation.
Rehearsals for Catalina Brass are held every Thursday, 6:00pm – 7:00pm, at Westlakes Music Centre.
